The short answer
The chain is the cheapest, most-neglected reliability item on an electric dirt bike — and on these bikes it matters more than the low mileage suggests, because they make strong low-end torque that loads the chain hard. Clean and lube it every few rides, keep pressure-washers away from the electronics, and set the tension to your bike's spec. Two minutes after a ride buys you a quieter, more efficient drivetrain and sprockets that last.
There's one rule here that a gas-bike habit will get wrong, so we'll start with it.
The electric-specific rule: protect the electronics
On a gas bike, hosing everything down is normal. On a Sur-Ron, Talaria, or Segway, a pressure washer is a genuine hazard. Aimed near the chain, it drives water and grit past seals into the controller, motor, battery connectors, and wheel bearings — and water in the electronics is a far more expensive problem than a dirty chain.
- Use a gentle hose or a bucket and brush, never a pressure washer at the drivetrain.
- Keep water away from the controller, motor, battery seams, and charge port.
- Dry the chain before lubing — lube traps water against the links if you don't.
A dab of dielectric grease on the electrical connectors during a wash keeps corrosion out; that's the electric-bike equivalent of the maintenance a gas bike doesn't need.
Step 1: clean it
A chain wears fastest as grinding paste — old lube plus trail grit. Get that off first:
- Getting the bike on a stand so the rear wheel spins free makes this far easier.
- Apply a chain degreaser or a gentle cleaner, and work it in with a stiff brush (a dedicated chain brush or an old toothbrush) as you rotate the wheel by hand.
- Wipe the chain clean with a rag and let it dry completely.
Do this by hand — resist the urge to blast it (see above).
Step 2: lube it — and why wax usually wins
With the chain clean and dry, lube it. For most off-road electric riding, a chain wax or dry-style lube is the smart default: it goes on wet, dries to a drier film, and attracts far less dirt than a wet oil — so the chain stays cleaner and lasts longer.
Apply to the inside of the chain (the side that contacts the sprockets) while slowly rotating the wheel, cover the full loop, then let it set for a few minutes and wipe off the excess — excess lube just collects grit. If your chain is a sealed O/X/Z-ring type, your lube must be ring-safe (the wax above is); the wrong solvent-heavy product can degrade the seals.
Wet oil has its place — sustained wet, muddy conditions where you need lube that clings — but on a dry, dusty trail it turns into the grinding paste you just cleaned off.
Step 3: check the tension
A chain needs a specific amount of free play, and getting it wrong hurts either way:
- Too loose slaps, skips on the sprocket, and can derail.
- Too tight is worse than most people think — it overloads the countershaft and bearings as the suspension moves through its travel.
The exact slack figure and axle torque are model-specific — set them to your bike's manual, not a number off the internet. The method is universal: check slack at the middle of the lower run with the bike unloaded, adjust both sides of the axle evenly so the rear wheel stays aligned, then torque the axle to spec. A new chain stretches as it beds in, so re-check after the first ride or two.
Loose bolts are a running theme on these high-vibration bikes — a torque wrench and a little threadlocker on the axle and sprocket bolts is cheap insurance.
When to replace the chain (and sprockets together)
A chain is a wear item. Replace it when it's stretched past spec (a chain-wear gauge is a few dollars), when links are stiff or rusted after cleaning, or when the sprocket teeth start to hook. Replace the chain and sprockets as a set when they're worn — a fresh chain on hooked sprockets wears out fast, and worn sprockets on a new chain do the same.
